Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Indonesia is the largest and deepest volcanic lake in the world. It occupies the caldera of an active Toba supervolcano, which has only erupted twice in a million years. Experts consider it a silent time bomb, but for many tourists mesmerized by the beauty of the lake and its surrounding landscapes, it is a prime destination for a breathtaking tour.
Interestingly, Lake Toba’s wonderful attractions aren’t just about the waters, though swimming on Samosir Island is a top activity. You can also explore other attractions such as Batak Museum in Tomok Village, Tuktuk Village, Huta Ginjang and Sipiso-Piso Waterfall. You may also want to time your trip around the Lake Toba Festival, held every September, to experience a glorious celebration of ancient Batak culture. A taste of the local cuisine is also a must, from its take on Japanese sushi called Naniura to its take on Philippine suman via Ombus Ombus, going hungry in Lake Toba is not an option.
Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport (formerly Silangit Airport) is the gateway to Lake Toba. It serves major cities and is only 48 kilometers away, easily traveled by land.
