TRIBUNNEWS.IT – Russian officials are concerned about security during Victory Day celebrations on May 9, 2023.
Victory Day is an annual Russian celebration commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over the Nazis in World War II.
“There was a nervousness like I’ve never seen before,” said an official at the Moscow mayor’s office, quoted by The GuardianMonday (8/5/2023).
“But Victory Day must go on, there is no other choice,” he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin took an unusual step on Friday (5/5/2023).

President Putin held a meeting with the Russian Security Council to discuss preparations for the Victory Day parade.
The meeting was also attended by a number of high-ranking Russian officials and the heads of the Russian Defense and Security Agency.
Previously there was a drone attack on the Kremlin government building on Wednesday (3/5/2023) in the morning.
The Kremlin has accused Ukraine of being behind the drone strike, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied.
President Zelensky said that Ukraine currently lacks weapons and it is impossible to use its weapons to attack Russia outside the battlefield.

Before the drone attack on the Kremlin government building, there were signs of unease among Russian leaders over Victory Day celebrations.
Six Russian regions have canceled Victory Day celebrations.
A region within 400 miles of the Ukrainian border has canceled plans for Victory Day celebrations on May 9, 2023.

One of the annual Victory Day events, the Immortal Regiment Parade, was also canceled this year.
