AMPONTOONS.COM, JAKARTA – The Indonesian contingent at the 2023 SEA Games managed to surpass the goal of 69 gold medals headed by President Joko Widodo.
As of Monday (15/5/2023), Indonesia confirmed they have taken home 76 gold medals.
This achievement was also complemented by 66 silver medals and 94 bronze medals, so that overall Indonesia managed to get 236 medals to rank third in the provisional ranking.
As is known, President Joko Widodo always welcomes developments and has hopes for Indonesian athletes who make Cambodia proud.
“I really appreciate the medals, because we have reached 60 (gold). The target was 60 yesterday, but I asked for more than 69. I hope it will be exceeded,” President Jokowi told Istora Senayan, Jakarta , Sunday (14/5/2023).
The goal proclaimed by President Jokowi actually surpasses the nine gold medals brought by the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Earlier Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ariotedjo and all sports stakeholders had developed a strategy so that the Indonesian contingent would manage to get 60 gold medals and place third in the final medal standings.
The Indonesian contingent also managed to become the overall champions in a number of sports including pencak silat, wushu and bicycle racing.
Pencak silat is one of Indonesia’s mainstay sports contributing most of the earnings with 9 gold medals.
Then 7 gold medals in athletics also helped Indonesia achieve its medal goal.
Besides pencak silat and athletics, wrestling surprisingly managed to win 4 gold medals on the first day of the competition.

Indonesia’s gold medal tally still has the potential to keep increasing from the sports branches which will only hold the final match on Tuesday (16/5/2023).
Badminton at least managed to secure 2 more gold medals through the all-Indonesian final from women’s doubles and men’s singles.
On the same day, the sport of football should also be able to carve the history of its first gold medal since 1991.
