We went to bed early that day, knowing our driver would pick us up early in the morning. It’s still dark outside and the driver was already waiting for us in the lobby.
My bag was packed and I was ready to go, as I was wrapped up in my jacket, knit cap, scarf and gloves. We got in the car and left our hotel “MesaStila” to watch one of the most spectacular sunrises.
After a journey of about 3 hours, we arrived at the parking lot which is at the foot of Sikunir hill around 4:30 am where our local guide was waiting for us.
It was still pitch dark when we started our journey. We use the light from our headlamp which was provided to us by our guide and which was our only source of light for a while.
From the parking lot it takes 45 minutes of walking to reach the top of Sikunir hill.
At 5:15 I reached the top and waited for the sun to come up.

I was in complete awe as I stood atop the 2263m Sikunir hill, as I watched the sun emerge dramatically from the horizon, casting its golden rays piercing through the endless sea of clouds, with Monte Sindoro as a glorious backdrop – this is a sunrise I will never forget.
It. Era. Spectacular. you have to see for yourself to believe!
Sikunir Hill offers not only a majestic golden sunrise. Expect total tranquility here to observe the vast sea of clouds with towering mountain peaks, the picturesque view of Cebong Lake, the surrounding villages and the lush terraced fields that will leave you in awe.
After witnessing the golden sunrise, we started walking down the hill and had a quick breakfast of small potatoes and fried tempe before continuing our journey to discover Indonesia’s oldest Hindu temples — But this is another story for another time 😉
