Wat Pho is the largest sleeping Buddha statue in Bangkok, Thailand – Signals that the Covid pandemic is regressing. Let’s hope there are no more outbreaks. Hopefully, with all the government’s efforts to provide vaccines to all Indonesian people, whatever variants of Covid that appear can be prevented. Likewise around the world, so we can travel again, wherever we want.
So, as I write this post, Thailand has opened its doors to Indonesian tourists. According to reports, Thailand has opened its gates to foreign tourist arrivals starting November 1, 2021 yesterday. Indonesia is included in the 60 countries of origin of tourists who can enter Thailand. So, for those who have itchy feet, let’s get ready to explore Thailand again. One of them is to visit Wat Pho, the temple where Thailand’s largest and oldest giant sleeping Buddha statue is located.
How to get to the temple or Wat Pho temple

It can be done in two ways, using a car or by motor boat across the Chao Phraya River.
My visit to this place was after exploring the Grand Palace which is only about 12 minutes away by bus. But as we took a hire travel car, there was no need to turn around, it took 2 minutes to arrive.

It was just before the end of the year, world tourists flocked here. It seems impossible to penetrate the period with the vehicle. Then the driver suggested we walk.
It turns out that it is not far, 17 minutes have arrived. Although I was sweating when I arrived as the weather was hot too. Plus tourists even ants make the body more tired.

Luckily a Bodhi tree has grown in the temple grounds for shade. Thai Buddhists believe that this tree is descended from the Bodhi tree of Bodhgaya in India where Buddha attained enlightenment. Because of this, the temple courtyard is heavily shaded. I decided to take a quick break before heading in, exploring the temples and Sleeping Buddha statues in Bangkok which are believed to be the oldest and largest in Thailand.
Entry price

The ticket purchase counter is located on the left side of the building. Entrance ticket price 100 baht/person. Children with a height of 1.2 meters are transported free of charge. This ticket can also be exchanged for a bottle of cold mineral water. As soon as you drink it, its freshness immediately removes any tiredness.
The temple itself does not charge any extra fees. But for an hour of Thai massage it costs about 480 baht.

History of Wat Pho temple and home to the world’s largest reclining Buddha
The temple where the Wat Pho statue of the sleeping Buddha was established in 1782. Formerly known as Wat Potaram. This is also the oldest temple in Bangkok, even before the founding of modern Thailand. At that time the center of the Royal Thai government was still based in Ayutthaya. After the capture of Ayutthaya by the Burmese, King Rama I expanded the temple to install statues and artifacts salvaged from Ayutthaya in 1801. The temple was later renamed Wat Phra Chetuphon.
Besides being home to the reclining Buddha statue, Wat Pho is also Thailand’s first state university. Locals come here to study and practice traditional medicine, as well as traditional Thai massage.
So don’t be surprised if there are traditional Thai massage offerings if you picnic here.

I love historic places like this. Whether it’s a place of worship or a museum. Even though the temple was filled with visitors at that time, the calm aura emanating from the walls and sacred objects also made the mind calm.
As you enter the visitor corridor, there is a giant Buddha statue on the left. This is a Buddha image, after his reincarnation is complete, he immediately enters Nirvana. In other words, this is a testament to the respect his followers showed when the Buddha was ill. With a compassionate countenance, he forms a drawing posture known as sihasayas the posture of a sleeping or lying lion.

The Buddha statue Wat Pho is 15m high and 46m long. This recumbent position as well as symbolizing the transition to nirvana (afterlife), the highest attainment of Buddhist beliefs, Thais also believe that worshiping this statue brings good luck, happiness and peace.
I also admire the carvings, the paintings, the murals, on the walls, columns and ceilings. So beautiful and detailed. Plants, lotus flowers complete with leaves. Monks who are praying and all the traditions related to the beliefs of the terhapa people Sang Buddha.
The beauty of the Wat Pho temple The statue of the sleeping Buddha is no less than the beauty of the Grand Palace, the official residence of the Thai royal family. Perhaps because the Wat Pho complex is also a place of worship for the royal family.
